Nikki Haley has come under heavy fire after her answer at a New Hampshire town hall didn’t include slavery as part of her answer, leading many people to call for her clarification of comments.
She refused to remove the Confederate flag until after the tragedy in Charleston and attempted to justify a Confederate History Month. She is just as MAGA as Trump!
Recent Controversy
Nikki Haley has responded to recent controversy surrounding her answer to a question regarding the cause of the Civil War with efforts to clarify her thoughts. As former United Nations ambassador and South Carolina governor seeking the Republican presidential nomination, Haley’s candid statements have garnered both Democrats and Republicans alike.
She initially stated that the war was about how government operated and which freedoms people had and didn’t have, prompting one voter to ask her about slavery – to which she responded: “Well, it was probably all sorts of different factors.”
After this momentous moment in her polling numbers, Nikki Haley campaigned in New Hampshire with the endorsement of its governor Chris Sununu and her numbers increasing ahead of its primary. NBC’s Mary Markos interviewed her and discussed everything from Civil War remarks to her support of abortion rights legislation.
Slavery was the cause of the Civil War
Debate remains fierce over what caused the Civil War, even among scholars who generally recognize slavery as one of its major causes. Slavery played an essential role in South Carolina’s secession from the Union and creation of the Confederate States of America, and relying on slave labor was key for Southern plantations owners’ survival against Northern industrialized economies.
Slavery was deeply embedded into both American culture and politics, with many Southern politicians strongly advocating its continuation. Any efforts by northern antislavery forces to limit this practice were met with resistance from Southern politicians – even leading them to secession from their respective regions.
Nikki Haley gave an answer that highlighted why she believed the Civil War began: it was due to how government ran and its restrictions and freedoms. Unfortunately, when asked the same question again by another individual he didn’t want her to answer; she continued her conversation without taking part.
It was about freedom
Former UN Ambassador Susan Rice faltered while answering a question about slavery during the American Civil War, prompting swift criticism and rebuttal from Democrats and Republicans alike – including President Biden.
At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, she was asked what caused the Civil War. In response, she answered that it was about freedom without directly mentioning slavery – an answer which sent shockwaves through the audience.
After the Civil War, freedom took on new meaning. No longer was it defined as an easy path leading towards greater liberty; rather it became a source of conflict open to diverse interpretations. Slavery’s abolition gave new significance to individual freedom – prompting questions such as “Do former slaves have the right to vote or own property? And, if so, why?”
It was about the Constitution
Nikki Haley has enjoyed renewed momentum since her strong performances at recent GOP debates; however, on Thursday she found herself embroiled in controversy following remarks she made regarding the American Civil War.
At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, a former United Nations ambassador engaged in an unsettling exchange with one of her constituents. When asked by them to discuss the causes of the Civil War and slavery specifically, her response did not mention either topic at all; the voter was seemingly surprised and shocked at this answer from her.
Many scholars cite chattel slavery as the root of this conflict, though states’ rights also played an integral part in it. According to the Bill of Rights in the Constitution, any powers not delegated to the federal government belong solely to individual states and people.
Issues surrounding states’ rights have reemerged under Donald Trump administration in relation to immigration and racial equity; Haley was however heavily criticized by both Democrats and Republicans alike for her initial response.
