Zendaya recently made headlines when she unveiled an empty Instagram feed. Some speculate it might be part of her strategy to promote her 2024 movies such as Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and Dune: Part 2, in which Timothee Chalamet, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh will feature prominently.
Eagle-eyed followers noticed she unfollowed several celebrities including Gigi and Bella Hadid as well as Zayn Malik.
What happened?
Zendaya stunned fans on Wednesday when she initiated a shocking social media cleansing. The 27-year-old actress deleted all followers, including close acquaintances like boyfriend Tom Holland (Spider-Man).
Since she began promoting her upcoming films Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and Dune: Half 2, which are set for release this year. Singer Demi Lovato has mostly avoided public view in order to spend quality time with her boyfriend who recently sent out an adorable mirror selfie birthday greeting to his muse.
Tom and Zendaya have been romantically linked since 2016, yet rarely show public affection or discuss it on social media. Recently however, he addressed engagement rumors surrounding his co-star with an adorable photo post featuring them snuggled close and his reference to Zendaya as “MJ” as part of its caption – fans immediately responded by leaving heart emojis and wishes for the couple!
Why did Zendaya do it?
Zendaya has become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars since she made her first television appearance on Disney’s tween show Shake It Up in 2010. Since then, she has gone on to become the face of Barbie and appear in box office hits such as The Greatest Showman and Spider-Man Homecoming. Not one to rest on her laurels, the 27-year-old actress made history this year at the Emmys when she won Best Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria at age 27!
Her portrayal of Rue Bennett on HBO teen drama True Blood showcased her acting range and distinguished her from peers. Additionally, she showcased her singing talents with both a self-titled album and collaborations such as Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman soundtrack hit.
Zendaya looks set to make 2023 an even greater year for herself with roles in Be My Baby and Guadagnino’s Challengers opposite Tom Holland, but before she kicks off 2023 Zendaya is already making waves on social media. She recently broke her own Instagram record!
Why did she unfollow Tom Holland?
Tom Holland and Zendaya have been dating for three years. Both actresses have kept their romance under the radar, sharing only occasional sweet Instagram posts of them together. But recently rumors started swirling that something may have changed between the couple after Zendaya was seen wearing an enormous ring on her left hand in an Instagram post that has since been deleted by Zendaya herself.
Couple have also been seen together at public events, such as the 2021 Ballon d’Or Ceremony where they posed for photos together smiling widely.
Recently, however, it seems as if they are no longer together. While promoting their films together, Tom has been seen with other women, including Uncharted costar Nadia Parkes from Uncharted. While they could just be casually dating each other or more seriously pursuing other relationships simultaneously; Timothee Chalamet has even been linked as possible potential romantic interests for Tom.
What’s the deal?
Since reigniting romance rumors while filming Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016, Zendaya and Holland have kept their romance relatively private, rarely showing public affection or showing it through photos on Instagram – except one recent kissing post shared via Zendaya’s account.
However, Holland made sure to wish his co-star a Happy Birthday in style by posting an adorable mirror selfie and captioned it: “MJ have the happiest birthday and don’t forget me when you wake up!”
But the pair don’t appear as close as before. Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that she has stopped following many celebrities including the Hadid sisters, Zayn Malik and Dua Lipa – something a source told PEOPLE was nothing personal; no hard feelings existed between anyone she unfollowed.
