Israeli Historian Yuval Noah Harari: Trump Election Would Be ‘Death Blow’ to Global Order

Harari is currently on a 10-day silent meditation retreat to practice Vipassana. His book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind has become a New York Times bestseller, being recommended by Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Natalie Portman and Janelle Monae among others.

Harari and his wife Itzik Yahav reside in an expensive village of houses in northern Israel with views across half the country; he works from his home office.

January 6

A new indictment against Donald Trump claims he tried to change their decision through false claims of voting machine manipulation and election fraud, even after state and federal officials informed him these were unsubstantiated claims. Prosecutors allege that Donald Trump exerted pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to reject electoral votes, but when this attempt failed he encouraged his supporters to protest at the Capitol building to block Congress from certifying them on January 6.

Indictment charges Donald Trump with using “violence and chaos” of an insurrection to advance his campaign of lies while leading a crowd filled with violent white supremacists and members of Oath Keepers/Proud Boys that was known to contain weapons. If found guilty on these counts he could receive up to 20 years in jail.

Yuval Noah Harari

Harari’s work, while highly popular, has received mixed academic reception. Many academics consider his account an evolutionary history of humanity that ignores modern political and technological revolutions.

Harvill Secker published it with great success in the UK; HarperCollins released a revised edition with new introduction in 2017.

Political insiders widely believed Donald Trump would never win the Republican nomination or presidency; many believed he was too inexperienced, unorthodox and divisive to even contest an election campaign. Trump alienated even conservative voters of color, business Republicans, free trade Republicans and members of the “alt-right”. Additionally, his rhetoric created fears of national security crises and anti-Muslim sentiment while sparking accusations against “political correctness”, and blamed civil unrest on Black Lives Matter movement members and members of loosely organized “antifa” groupings.

Permissive Consensus

Many scholars have raised alarms about a global order in crisis. They frequently point to President Trump’s policies and diplomatic style, the rise of populism, China’s assertiveness and unilateral withdrawal from international agreements as symptoms of an impending catastrophe; yet their exact definition remains obscure.

Some changes may affect certain aspects of the current order without undermining its basic ordering principles; others could entirely transform it. For instance, any erosion of postwar “permissive consensus,” where national governments cooperate on long-term projects despite any short-term domestic interests conflicting with this cooperation would damage global order.

Trump’s combative style and emphasis on economic and nationalist sentiment appealed to a broad base of voters, while drawing explicit support from the emerging “alt-right” movement. More established candidates from the Republican Party such as Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio failed to offer clear alternatives that helped secure his victory.

Conclusion

Political insiders were mistaken in thinking Donald Trump’s bold, aggressive rhetoric and calls to build a wall with Mexico, withdraw from foreign alliances, and restrict immigration would turn off traditional Republican voters; but, contrary to expectations, his message won over majority white voters as well as members of his business and free trade wing as well as nationalists populists and white nationalists – who proved to be key electoral blocs for him to win his candidacy for president.

More established Republicans like Jeb Bush (brother of two former presidents), Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz of Florida and Texas, as well as New Jersey governor Chris Christie tried unsuccessfully to provide an alternative to Donald Trump; but none was forthcoming. Any attempt at holding Trump accountable through court cases or popular protest may only further his belief in an ongoing conspiracy against him; furthermore, even massive impeachment votes would not prevent him from running for re-election in 2024.
