Trump Is Anticipated to See the ‘Opening Statements’ at the E Jean Carroll Trial

A Manhattan jury will now hear opening statements in E Jean Carroll’s defamation case against Donald Trump for statements made that denied her allegations of sexual abuse at Bergdorf Goodman department store during the 1990s. They will determine how much Trump must pay in damages.

Trump appears in court for start of new E. Jean Carroll trial

Trump Expected to Attend Trial Opening

Donald Trump will soon take to a Manhattan courtroom for his next high-stakes trial following his victory at Iowa. This civil trial will determine how much of an amount he must pay author E. Jean Carroll who alleges defamation regarding her sexual assault allegations by Donald Trump.

Carroll’s lawyers contend he should testify because his false comments caused irreparable damage to her reputation and career, but are prohibited from alleging he did not assault Carroll or that she falsely reported being assaulted; further, Judge Lewis Kaplan has placed restrictions on what Trump can say should he take the stand.

Alina Habba, Trump’s attorney in this matter, made arguments against some restrictions ahead of trial, noting her client could offer significant testimony as the 77-year-old Republican frontrunner is considered “considerably credible.” Kaplan denied her request saying he didn’t operate a “kangaroo court” or have the authority to impose conditions or restrictions.

Trump Arrives in Court

Trump will arrive via private plane at LaGuardia Airport and be met by motorcade before entering Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, possibly speaking with reporters outside the courthouse before heading onward to New Hampshire for his campaign rally.

Judge Lewis Kaplan has already found that Donald Trump is responsible for defaming Carroll after she accused him of assault in a Bergdorf Goodman changing room nearly 30 years ago. Trump is accused of characterizing her claims in interviews as being “total con job” or a “fraud.”

Trump’s lawyers have requested the judge restrict what their client can say during his trial, citing his history of making defamatory comments about his accusers and the case, in violation of federal law. Judge Kaplan promised to take appropriate measures; he hasn’t set limits yet but warned his team he could violate his rulings or laws by publicly criticizing this case.

Trump Testifies

He will take the stand and answer hours of questions in an ongoing defamation trial against him, potentially creating further issues for a presidential candidate renowned for his outspoken rhetoric. Jury selection starts Tuesday for this Manhattan federal court hearing where Trump will provide testimony under oath.

The trial will focus on statements Donald Trump made to columnist E. Jean Carroll in 2022 as he denied her rape allegations against him. A separate jury trial found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation; this one, however, will only focus on damages.

His’s lawyers have fought any precautionary restrictions placed upon his testimony by the judge. That may prove challenging given Trump’s repeated defamatory comments against Carroll on Truth Social platform – such as accusing her of peddling false rape claims – as well as tweets regarding civil fraud case brought by New York attorney general against them and demanding its dismissal.

Trump Faces Objections

Judge Rosen has placed strict limitations on what Trump can publicly state about this case. These include not asserting that he didn’t sexually assault Carroll or suggesting she made up her claims, among other restrictions.

Donald Trump’s attorneys have requested in court filings that his trial be postponed one week, in order to accommodate his schedule. Jury selection was scheduled to commence Tuesday with opening statements occurring later in the day.

The second trial focuses on Trump’s defamatory comments against Carroll while president, rather than her allegations that he groped her prior to 2016. Last May, a Manhattan federal jury awarded Carroll $5 Million as damages after finding that Trump abused her in 1996 in a department store dressing room and defamed her post-presidency comments regarding this incident had defamed her further; further allegations from multiple accusers are expected at trial as witnesses for or against them have testified or are set to testify as part of this case’s significance for women’s rights groups as several witnesses testified or are expected to testify at trial as witnesses or defendants against one or both parties involved.
