Jodie Foster and Kali Reis are formidable forces this season. Reis, an ex-world champion boxer who makes her series debut as Evangeline Navarro alongside Foster as Liz Danvers to investigate an Arctic research station’s missing men.
Showrunner Issa Lopez has broadened the focus of True Detective this season from Bayou to Ice. She says her new characters represent this change.
HBO’s True Detective
Jodie Foster returns to her detective roots in HBO’s True Detective anthology series with Night Country. This installment sees Ennis, Alaska gumshoes Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) investigate the disappearance of six men operating the Tsalal Arctic Research Station; to solve it they must confront themselves and investigate haunted truths buried deep below Alaska’s eternal ice.
Issa Lopez is best known as the showrunner of 2017 horror flick Tigers Are Not Afraid and this season marks her series debut as well as that of former professional boxer Kali Reis as Evangeline Navarro.
Reis has recently appeared in the 2021 thriller Catch the Fast One and donned an all-new look featuring longer, darker locks and beard. Additionally, season four of True Detective will premiere late 2022 and you can check out its first trailer above.
Jodie Foster & Kali Reis
Jodie Foster may have made her last detective movie appearance back in 1990’s The Silence of the Lambs, but that hasn’t stopped her from lending her expertise to HBO’s crime-thriller anthology series True Detective Season 4. Filming recently got underway in Iceland for this installment and it features Jodie Foster reprising her role as FBI Agent Clarice Starling while meeting state trooper Natalie Danvers as her counterpart character.
Kali Reis will co-star as Danvers. She hails from two cultures – Seaconke Wampanoag and Cape Verdean. Additionally, she holds multiple world boxing championships across several weight classes. Kali made her acting debut in 2021’s Catch the Fair One alongside director Josef Kubota Wladyka and helped develop its story together; due to this project True Detective producers recognized Kali as ideal casting.
HBO’s True Detective: Night Country
After an extended break, HBO’s crime anthology True Detective: Night Country — featuring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as investigators in Alaska — debuts tonight on both HBO and HBO Max.
The new season opens up in Ennis, Alaska – 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Here, Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) reside within their secluded community. Moreover, its extreme weather becomes an integral component of their storylines.
True Detective has made an impressive return after an extended hiatus, and its fourth season seems truly back on track. All the elements from its McConaughey-Harrelson original remain compelling: starry detective duos with troubled pasts; intricate murder mysteries and fascinating settings. Writer-director Issa Lopez has elevated True Detective even further with her addition of supernatural elements into this season of television brilliance.
True Detective Season 4
On Sunday night, HBO and HBO Max presented the fourth season of True Detective: Night Country. This anthology crime drama switches locations from Louisiana and Ozarks to Alaska for six episodes this time around; Oscar winner Jodie Foster stars alongside pro boxer-turned actor Kali Reis as Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro respectively.
Their case leads them to a remote town in the Arctic where eight men operating a research station mysteriously vanish and may be connected with the murder of an Indigenous climate activist six years prior. To solve the mystery, detectives must face their own demons as well as uncover hidden truths buried under eternal ice.
True Detective for the first time features a female showrunner (Issa Lopez of Tigers Are Not Afraid fame) taking over from Nic Pizzolatto as series creator; yet its focus on women extends far beyond these actors on screen and behind it.
