Is Sony planning to release a PlayStation 5 “Pro” version This Year?

Sony has historically offered more powerful versions of consoles three years after initial releases to help gamers upgrade to new technology and support higher resolution gaming. For example, the PlayStation 4 Pro debuted three years after the original PS4 was first available, providing access to the same library of games while providing 4K resolution gaming and providing increased immersive visual fidelity; we anticipate similar behavior from PlayStation 5 Pro.

Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based games consultancy Kantan Games, told CNBC that “there seems to be a broad consensus in the game industry that Sony is indeed preparing a launch of a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024.”

A more powerful PS5 could run games at 8K resolution and offer buttery smooth gameplay with 120Hz refresh rates, and also is expected to be much more power efficient thanks to AMD’s cutting-edge Zen 4 microprocessor architecture. Furthermore, sources have reported that it will come equipped with a dedicated graphics chip able to accelerate and process games much more rapidly than its base counterpart.

The new console would feature an improved implementation of ray tracing, which is a rendering technique used to produce more realistic lighting effects. Furthermore, HDR technology would enable gamers to enjoy games using more lifelike colors and accurate light reflections.

Key To Gaming reported recently that the new console would be known as Project Trinity and feature an upgraded CPU with 18000mts memory and 30 WGPs (workgroup processors). They expect this upgrade system to provide more consistent frame rates at 4K resolution, support an 8K performance mode mode, and provide faster ray-tracing performance.

Sony

Sony remains unclear as to their plans to make good on these promises, yet it is clear they want to upgrade their existing consoles. Hardware sales have seen decline year-on-year and recently saw $10 billion wiped off their stock value; perhaps the PS5 Pro could provide just the boost Sony needs to turn things around?

Rumors surrounding a more powerful PlayStation remain uncertain, yet it seems likely that Sony will launch a Pro model later this year as an interim step between PS5 and what we could consider its successor, PS6. Mid-generation upgrades often provide gamers with additional value while keeping their interest alive until moving onto new generations of consoles.
