‘Service Above Self’: DeSantis Links Patriotism and Military Service

Service

Rotary International’s motto, Service Above Self, encapsulates its spirit perfectly. Committed to helping humanity as its primary focus, Rotary stands apart as an organization.

“Woke”, ESG”, Zuckerbucks”, Central Bank Digital Currency” are words often mentioned during DeSantis’ campaign appearances and media interviews; yet these were scarcely mentioned at his televised town hall event.

Patriotism

Patriotism refers to an emotional attachment and identification with one’s country, including an eagerness to make sacrifices on its behalf. It should not be confused with feelings of loyalty or obligation which are grounded in moral virtues like associative duty (see our entry on special relationships for further explanation).

Baron differentiates between worldly patriotism, focused on improving a country in an impersonal, non-ethical fashion, and ethical patriotism, which emphasizes moral identity over achievements or virtues of its members.

An individual’s perception of their country’s moral standing is an integral component of whether people view them as patriotic. Our poll reveals that most voters 65 and older regard patriotism as very important in their lives, while younger voters under 30 tend not to hold this view – instead citing responsibility towards family and community as paramount factors for patriotism definition.

Military Service

DeSantis’ military experience in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay is an integral component of his campaign; mailers featuring photos of him in uniform frequently appear in Florida voters’ mailboxes. Unfortunately, much of it remains hidden by the secrecy surrounding the Pentagon; many questions about his service remain unanswered other than through official documents, his book or speeches by him.

He advised Special Operations Task Force-West commander, deployed to Fallujah during President George W. Bush’s troop surge operation, on legal matters pertaining to legal advice regarding SEAL actions on the battlefield and allegations of torture.

At an event for veterans in Columbia, South Carolina on Tuesday evening, DeSantis unveiled his plan for an “Mission First” military. This includes eliminating “woke agenda”-oriented administrators such as diversity and inclusion coordinators while prioritizing lethality and readiness over drag shows on bases.

The American Dream

This advertisement begins with images of razor wire and military force as James McCarthy recounts DeSantis’ service in Iraq as a Navy judge advocate general. Finally, DeSantis appears at Guantanamo Bay when our nation came under attack – “then he fought back”.

Religion News Service reports that DeSantis’ campaign has unveiled a digital video in which DeSantis is presented as having been divinely appointed to become Florida governor and president, according to Religion News Service. On the eighth day, God looked down upon His utopia and saw that it needed protecting, so He created Ron DeSantis – thus giving rise to DeSantis being presented as having been created “by Him alone”.

DeSantis would do away with diversity and inclusion administrators and policies as president, prioritizing warfighting over equality for every department’s list of priorities, banning books deemed offensive, using public school funds for charter school expansion, and initiating a full-scale assault against liberal values and democratic institutions.

The Future

DeSantis plans on winning the Republican nomination for president include disentangling political agendas from military operations, restoring military standards, breaking through bureaucracy, and increasing accountability. If elected president, his plans include eliminating diversity equality and inclusion administrators for every department; ending all DEI hiring; banning recruitment content that supports activist ideologies on military social media accounts; as well as prioritizing warfighting readiness as the top priority within the military.

DeSantis also addressed his gubernatorial accomplishments, such as cutting spending and increasing domestic energy production to combat inflation, while cutting college tuition to combat inflation. Furthermore, DeSantis addressed Israel-Hamas hostilities and border crises; his electability; as well as China’s move toward Taiwan.

DeSantis made his remarks the same day his campaign unveiled a digital video highlighting his Navy service, where he earned a Bronze Star while serving as Judge Advocate General in Iraq. RealClearPolitics currently ranks him third behind former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Nikki Haley for GOP presidential candidacy in 2024.
