Bill

Bill Belichick, known for being reserved and unobtrusive, choked up when thanking the Kraft family, Patriots staff, players, security personnel and media members – and he’s become one of the most celebrated head coaches in NFL history.

Bill established an unparalleled legacy; but now is the time for this 71-year-old to move forward with life.

Bill Belichick’s Farewell Speech

Bill Belichick made his decision public Thursday while standing next to team owner Robert Kraft and explaining they “mutually agreed” on splitting ways as head coach of the New England Patriots after 24 seasons and six Super Bowl victories.

Belichick was revered leader for the Patriots and one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, leaving his franchise with 333 wins – second-most all time – while building one of sports’ most lasting coaching empires; current and former head coaches like Mike Vrabel, Matt Patricia, Romeo Crennel and Nick Saban all trace their coaching lines back to him.

Belichick is known to be emotionally distant around cameras, but today was different. He took time out of his day to express his thanks to everyone involved with the team, fans and staff over the years – especially moved by an emotional letter sent from Milford, Massachusetts resident Beth Rayner-Zyskowski who wrote to thank her forever fan in New England.

Belichick’s Final Game

Bill Belichick remains modest despite the Patriots missing the playoffs for three of the past four years, yet praises his team, family and fans who have supported them. When he and owner Robert Kraft first met they shared a vision to form a championship football team not seen since decades in the NFL; Belichick became their de facto general manager overseeing all personnel decisions as he led them to six Super Bowl wins as well as numerous other victories.

Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Logan Mankins and others owe much of their success in the NFL to Bill Belichick’s development as head coach – his legacy will be hard for any other coach to emulate. Barring any last-minute deal between himself and the Krafts, Belichick will coach one final game on Sunday against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium before leaving to walk off in cold gloves for good.

Belichick’s Final Week

Bill Belichick and the Patriots reached an amicable parting this week, confirming at a news conference that both sides had mutually decided to part ways. Though expected, many within sports were shocked and taken aback at this development.

At a news conference, Belichick thanked the Kraft family for giving him an opportunity to coach their team. Additionally, he thanked players, team staff, security personnel and even media members – an unusual display from Belichick who tends to avoid direct confrontation with cameras.

He pointed out that his six Super Bowl championships with New England are more than anyone in NFL history, while his 333 regular and postseason wins rank second only to Don Shula’s 347 wins as an all-time win total. That will always remain his legacy no matter where his career leads him next.

Belichick’s Farewell Interview

Belichick, who holds six Super Bowl victories and ranks third among all-time winners, often spoke to media in an unflappable manner, yet became emotional when speaking of his appreciation for their fan base. “The fans here are incredible and I appreciate their support over these years,” he said. “From send-offs and parades to Sunday games or seeing them around town or wherever I travel – I truly cherish each and every interaction with our supporters here or wherever else my travels have taken me – it has truly been amazing.”

Robert Kraft, 82, thanked Belichick for remaining by his side throughout his coaching tenure – even during two major cheating investigations that cost the Patriots draft picks. Belichick will likely explore other head coaching vacancies across the NFL; but with an elegant farewell like this – an eventful and respectful farewell will serve as the ideal endpoint of one of the greatest coaching tenures ever in NFL history.
