Military-Aged Chinese Men Entering US Illegally?

Due to an overwhelming influx of Chinese migrants entering the US from South China, encounters in San Diego have increased exponentially. Many migrants believed to have hired smugglers were reported using TikTok videos for instructions on finding gaps in border walls at places like Jacumba.

Chinese Migrants

Many Chinese migrants making the trek to the United States are men fleeing repressive regimes and poor economic prospects in their home country, as part of an influx of people that has made September the highest month for illegal border crossings this year, according to Customs and Border Protection data.

Social media posts alleging China of sending troops disguised as migrants into America has led to unsubstantiated accusations, while there’s no indication the surge is related to any directive from their military.

Recent encounters between CBP officials and Chinese migrants have involved men of military age; this is likely the result of smugglers helping Chinese migrants breach the border at Jacumba Hot Springs in California, where there is a gap in an existing wall that border agents regularly patrol; many migrants fly directly into Tijuana before being guided through this gap by smugglers to pass into California through this gap.

Why are Chinese people coming?

Experts familiar with Chinese migrants say they are fleeing an oppressive Communist regime that has grown worse during a pandemic, seeing America as an oasis of liberty where they can pursue their dreams. Migrant advocates advocate that many of these people should receive asylum status; therefore they have asked Biden’s administration to expedite the processing of asylum cases that often takes years to resolve.

Many migrants have embarked on their treacherous journey by following directions provided by migrants who traveled before them on social media, traveling on planes, buses, boats and motorcycles across borders. Others simply seek economic refuge from China after its slowdown caused by pandemic virus has increased economic hardship. Some are seeking religious or political asylum while others hope to join relatives already settled there; those not granted asylum must apply for work authorization which can take several months before approval is given.

What are the consequences?

Many who travel to the US find themselves caught in an unpredictable legal limbo upon reaching their destination. Long waits to make their asylum case before a judge are commonplace and they often cannot work legally due to uncertain statuses.

President of the Border Patrol Union suggests that some Border Patrol agents could be agents working on behalf of China to infiltrate American society through migrants crossing our borders. He points to TikTok videos linking such Chinese Communist Party spies with migrants at our borders.

She notes that Chinese nationals’ rapid increase is driven by economic factors; Trump-era policies such as travel bans and Title 42 health policy encouraged migrants to attempt the treacherous journey; those of Asian descent also experienced increased racism during COVID-19 pandemic due to allegations linking their eating habits with disease spread.

Security

Immigration control is integral to national security, economic prosperity and rule of law. Illegal immigration weighs down our economy, affects American workers negatively, poses public safety threats, and enriches smugglers and criminals.

Although most illegal immigrants to the US seek a better life, it’s important to keep in mind that some could pose a danger. A recent post on ByteDance’s chat platform X showed evidence of some smugglers marking Border Patrol agents on maps as guides for their customers.

There are various policy solutions that could curb illegal entry. One would be providing undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship – this would enable people like Wang Qun to fulfill their dreams of making a good living here and help send their children through college. Current immigration laws that detain and deport millions are both burdensome and expensive, therefore adopting another strategy would be most suitable.
