Every new week brings with it new musical bliss. Here you will find a thrilling collaboration from Faye Webster and Lil Yachty as well as dance floor-ready heat from Logic1000, MJ Nebreda and Taty who were all involved with KCRW Young Creators Project alumni.
Ariana Grande has returned with her first single since 2020 titled Yes And? Arianators can look forward to the release of her seventh studio album in 2019;
Ariana Grande
After an eventful year during which Ariana Grande divorced her first husband, began dating one of her Wicked co-stars, and was labeled by his ex-wife as being unsuitable for dating, Ariana Grande is back with new music – “Yes And?”. Grande addresses public scrutiny regarding her appearance through this song.
Christian Breslauer-directed video features Grande speaking to an intimidating group of critics while wearing dance-inspired attire reminiscent of Paula Abdul’s 1988 video for “Cold Hearted.”
This song marks an unexpected but brilliant departure into ballroom-ready house music that recalls Madonna’s “Vogue.” Although not directly transposing its iconic original, its essence can still be felt through familiar snares and an offbeat spoken-word break.
Lil Nas X – J Christ
After nearly a year away from music video production, Lil Nas X is back with a banger and video that are sure to turn heads. While he is no stranger to controversial visuals, this one features religious imagery prominently.
This clip opens with a parade of celebrity lookalikes walking up a staircase towards heaven, including Ed Sheeran, Kanye West and Barack Obama impersonators with bared-chested chests. As it pans back down to hell the camera shows Nas stewing a pot full of human limbs while playing basketball with Satan.
“J Christ” is an irreverent parody set to a piano-forward beat, that mixes celebrity culture, religious iconography and drag culture together for maximum humor. It remains unclear whether the rapper intends to cause offense or gain followers with his performance.
21 Savage – American Dream
21 Savage returns after an extended studio hiatus with American Dream. His album serves as a personal journey, while outstanding production elevates the candid lyrical narratives that compose it.
Summer Walker, Mariah the Scientist, Brent Faiyaz and Lil Durk all make appearances on this album; some contributions such as “Pop Ur Shit” are classic Atlanta trap, while the postapocalyptic lyrics on “Dangerous” stand out as standout tracks.
Overall, 21 Savage’s record shines when he exposes his raw emotions – its strongest moments being a testament to the rapper’s perseverance.
Kali Uchis – Igual Que Un Angel
Kali Uchis is the ultimate self-love guru. She understands the depths of love, as well as its rarity in an age of superficial desires.
She specializes in smooth R&B that lures listeners in with silk-smooth bass lines and sensual tones – but on her fourth album Orquideas she goes beyond dance-hall convention.
Only she is capable of creating a US TikTok-friendly collaboration with Peso Pluma (“Igual Que Un Angel”) before turning it around with a flavor merengue track called Dame un beso/Muevete! Her fluidity between culture, genre, and language allows her to explore niche Latin American genres while maintaining her dreamy chillhop signature sound.
PinkPantheress – Loving You
PinkPantheress, also known as Victoria Beverly Walker, may not seem like someone who would make many friends among TikTok influencers. She frequently checks her phone while giving minimal eye-contact and occasionally yawning.
But her quirky, self-deprecating persona is just a front for a bold, sugary singing voice, which she exhibits through Heaven Knows. If her goal was to move beyond sample-heavy electronica of viral successes to more original and polished production music – Heaven Knows is proof. From intimate arrangements written with Danny L. Harle to haunting pieces like “Ophelia”, which opens with baroque, harp-driven instrumentals before ending with water bubbling over vocals like Hamlet’s heroine in one piece alone!
Lyrical Lemonade – Love You
Lyrical Lemonade, the music video production brand credited with some of the most cherished SoundCloud rap videos from 2023, has returned with a brand-new track. Cole Bennett, founder of Lyrical Lemonade, discusses his philosophy of adding personalization to music videos.
Lil Nas X returns with “J Christ.” He takes jabs at religious iconography with surprising humor reminiscent of his lightning bolt 2021 single Montero.
Residente looks back at his musical legacy with a cinematic experience. The Colombian-Mexican rapper blends soulful vocals with house beats on this track that explores turbulent love relationships, featuring Calle 13 as guest artist.
