Google CEO Says More Job Cuts Are Needed in 2024

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently sent out a memo informing employees to expect additional job cuts at Alphabet-owned company this year, according to The Verge. Pichai wrote “some roles may be affected” due to ongoing division changes.

Last week, Google conducted layoffs that affected hardware teams, search, voice assistant units, YouTube departments and augmented reality staffers – but employees can rest easy knowing these changes won’t reach 12,000 layoffs last year!

Google’s Layoffs

Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, issued an alert last week regarding layoffs that affected 1,000 workers across multiple divisions and has warned his staff of further job cuts in 2024. Pichai issued a memo warning employees that resource allocation changes may alter some roles.

Schindler stated that employees impacted will receive severance pay and be able to apply again for open roles with the tech giant as of April. The move comes amid major companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce and Meta, all cutting back after overhiring during the COVID pandemic.

Google recently announced a round of redundancies affecting “few hundred” roles worldwide within their advertising sales team, following previous rounds of layoffs across its hardware, central engineering, and Google Assistant divisions in recent months.

Pichai’s Memo

Google CEO Sundar Pichai released an internal memo this week alerting employees that more layoffs may be on the horizon, due to reorganizing efforts aimed at meeting ambitious goals and investing in “big priorities” this year. However, these role eliminations will not reach the scale seen last year and won’t impact every team directly.

Alphabet-owned company Google is in transition as it shifts its focus from hardware to artificial intelligence (AI) software development, leading to layoffs across advertising sales, search, voice assistant units, Pixel and Fitbit hardware teams, shopping, maps, policy core engineering departments as well as YouTube departments.

This company is revamping their augmented reality division in response to the rise of generative AI. What will change is unclear, although their CEO mentioned that ongoing decisions regarding resources and potential impacts on some departments would occur throughout 2018. As tech industries progress rapidly, companies must adjust to remain relevant.

Ambitious Goals

Google Search has long been an unnoticed companion in our lives, guiding us towards finding solutions for every question we pose. It’s hard to imagine a world without it, yet that may soon become reality.

Sundar Pichai informed employees in an internal memo that some roles will be affected as their company shifts its focus to AI and other big priorities for 2019. He further added that they plan to remove layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in certain areas.

Last year, Amazon laid off 12,000 employees – or approximately 6% of its workforce.

Pichai warned his staff that additional layoffs are on the horizon as Google pursues “ambitious goals” and invests in “big priorities this year.” Already this year, cuts have taken place across hardware engineering sales advertising sales search maps policy YouTube teams as well as many cancellations of hiring. Pichai assured employees that any additional layoffs wouldn’t be on an equal scale to last year.

What’s Next?

Google was established by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998 and has since had an enormous effect on people’s lives. Like any tech company, however, Google must constantly upgrade itself in order to stay competitive – that’s why it has recently made strides toward artificial intelligence, using this technology in many of its existing products and services.

However, it’s likely that the coming upgrades won’t go entirely smoothly. Last year saw layoffs begin the refocusing process at the company, and that process may well continue this year.

Alphabet CEO Larry Page announced to staff that further “role eliminations” would occur, yet did not specify to what extent or divisions these would impact. Last year, 12,000 jobs were shed due to overhiring during the pandemic and decreased consumer demand.

These cuts had an impactful ripple-through to various teams such as voice assistant units, hardware teams responsible for Pixel and Nest devices, shopping maps policy core engineering departments and YouTube departments. We can expect similar cuts this year but on a much smaller scale.
