Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and the prosecutor she hired to oversee her office’s election interference case against former President Trump have admitted they developed a romantic relationship. But in a 176-page filing made public Friday, both individuals denied this relationship caused any conflicts of interest.
Nathan Wade, special prosecutor Nathan Wade confirmed he and Willis had an intimate personal relationship, yet disclaimed any financial gain as a result of it, including sharing bank accounts or splitting travel expenses.
President Trump Responds to Fani Willis Admits to Romantic Relationship With Prosecutor
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has officially acknowledged her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade is romantic, yet denies claims it should disqualify her from prosecuting Donald Trump for election interference in Georgia.
Wade stated in his new affidavit that they have established a personal relationship since 2022, adding that neither have discussed the case or taken any actions related to it.
Trump graduated from Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania and quickly made an impression as a real estate developer and entrepreneur, building global brand recognition around “Trump”. He created hit reality TV show in which contestants vied to be his employee; multiple books including The Art of the Deal were published during his reign as businessman.
Michael Roman, one of the co-defendants in this case, filed a motion earlier this month seeking to dismiss and drop Willis and Wade from prosecution. On Friday, however, the district attorney and her office asked that Roman’s request be denied by a judge.
The President’s Response
On Friday morning, Trump took to social media in response to this news: “The Fulton County District Attorney just admitted she has a personal relationship with one of the prosecutors she appointed with help from White House and DOJ to prosecute President Trump,” wrote on Truth Social. This admission came through in court filing from Willis’ office which responded to a motion filed on Jan 8 by Michael Roman’s attorney to have his criminal indictment dropped along with disqualifying Fani Willis and Nathan Wade as prosecutorial witnesses in Roman’s case.
Fani Willis acknowledged her and Wade had an intimate personal relationship, yet claimed it did not raise ethical or conflict of interest issues. Additionally, she denied claims she used taxpayer funds for herself and Wade to financially benefit themselves; Roman’s lawyer Ashleigh Merchant will question both parties at a hearing scheduled for Feb 14.
The District Attorney’s Response
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ relationship with her prosecutor for President Trump’s election interference case has caused chaos within this high-stakes prosecution, prompting legal experts to express alarm that such allegations could taint a jury and thus compromise its verdict in this court battle.
Willis and her attorney had yet to respond to allegations of an affair between her and special prosecutor Nathan Wade that were first raised by Trump co-defendant Michael Roman in a court filing last month, wherein Roman alleged Willis financially benefitted from this relationship through Billable hours and credit statements showing Wade paying for plane tickets from Miami and San Francisco to her.
Fani Willis denied those claims in her court filing on Friday. She claimed her relationship with Wade began long after his appointment as special prosecutor in November 2021. Furthermore, Willis disproved any possibility that her relationship has compromised the case itself and Merchant needs to question both parties at an upcoming Feb 15 hearing in order to spot any misstatements within their affidavits or expose any misrepresentations of facts in them.
The Judge’s Response
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis responded to calls that she should step aside as prosecutor in former President Donald Trump and other defendants charged with election interference on Friday, filing documents that acknowledged she and top prosecutor Nathan Wade had an intimate relationship but denied this was enough to create any potential conflicts of interest.
Wade admitted in his affidavit that he and Willis developed a romantic relationship in 2022 after Wade was hired as lead attorney against Trump and others. However, he denied sharing financial accounts or household expenses between the two, while asserting that his hourly wages did not get divided among them.
Willis’ lawyer Ashleigh Merchant believes the motion to remove her and Wade from the case tries to “cobble together unremarkable circumstances of Special Prosecutor Wade’s appointment with irrelevant allegations about his personal life into an implausibly manufactured conflict of interest on behalf of the District Attorney.” To address the dispute, the judge presiding over it has scheduled an evidentiary hearing for February 15. Additionally, both prosecutors were issued subpoenas for testimony at this hearing.
