Elton John became the first person ever to win all four major awards Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys on January 15 with his Disney+ special Farewell to Dodger Stadium winning an Emmy award for outstanding variety special. Due to knee surgery he couldn’t accept his award personally so one of its executive producers accepted on his behalf.
‘On Cloud Nine’ After Earning EGOT Status With Emmys Win
Elton John just joined one of the most exclusive clubs in entertainment. At 76, rock icon Elton John won an Emmy for his live special at Dodger Stadium and thus becomes an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards).
John won in the Outstanding Variety Special category with Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium concert movie. Although he wasn’t present to accept his award himself, partner and one of its executive producers David Furnish accepted on his behalf.
EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards – four top US showbiz honors that only about 12 individuals have ever won competitively; others achieved it through honorary awards such as Audrey Hepburn receiving posthumously her EGOT of spoken word Grammy and Tony. Actor Philip Michael Thomas from “Miami Vice” also achieved it posthumously!
Elton John joins the EGOT club
Elton joined a select group of artists who have earned all four major arts honors (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards – known as EGOTs). On Monday at the 2024 Emmys he became only 19th person ever to achieve this achievement with his 2022 Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium winning Best Variety Special (Live).
John recorded this event during his farewell tour and featured performances by Kiki Dee, Dua Lipa and Brandi Carlile. While John himself could not attend due to knee surgery, producer Ben Wilson accepted the award on his behalf and accepted it on John’s behalf.
Elton has become one of the world’s best-known recording artists with multiple chart-topping hits under his belt and numerous Grammy awards, winning two for the song That’s What Friends Are For and an Oscar and Tony award each from Evita musical, along with numerous others for musical shows like Billy Elliot on Broadway.
Elton John’s EGOT status was a surprise
After decades-long efforts, Elton is finally one step closer to joining the elite club of EGOT winners. On Monday night he received his 19th Emmy win for his 2022 Disney+ special Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium which featured footage from his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour’s final North American show at Dodger Stadium filmed during Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour and won in Outstanding Variety Special category making him 19th person to achieve this remarkable status of having won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards all together! Unfortunately due to recovering from surgery due to which he couldn’t attend ceremony however was represented by producer Ben Winston accompanied by wife David Furnish as his representation team represented them both.
John first made his mark as an iconic musician in the 1970s with hits like Rocket Man, Crocodile Rock and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. By the ’80s and ’90s he had expanded beyond music into Broadway musicals such as Lion King and Aida; also creating moody albums which brought back memories of his early-’70s formative years.
Elton John’s EGOT win was a surprise
Elton has now joined this elite club by winning an Emmy award for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium on Disney+ in 2022. Only 19 other people have achieved such recognition thus far.
John was unfortunately unable to attend the awards ceremony due to a knee operation; however, David Furnish, his husband and executive producer for this special, was present and collected his award on his behalf. David reported back that John screamed in excitement upon hearing from David at 3am that they had won.
Elton graciously accepted his win, thanking streamer Disney+, special guests such as Dua Lipa and Kiki Dee, his tour’s crew, his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin (for whom the special was written), his tour crew, his amazing band (he also thanked them publicly!), as well as streamer Disney+ itself. This award came just one week after John celebrated his 76th birthday – something which left him feeling grateful: ‘I am so incredibly proud of all the incredible work that you have done, making me feel like I am in another world where this can happen’ was his response on Twitter (via Disney+).
