Taylor Swift fans will soon be able to relive the thrilling concert experience from her Eras Tour when Sam Wrench directs film debuts exclusively on Disney+ beginning March 15, the company announced Wednesday.

Director Sam Wrench

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour film was an unprecedented box office and VOD hit, and Disney+ CEO Bob Iger revealed in Wednesday’s earnings call that their streaming platform will release an extended version titled Taylor Swift: Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) on March 15. This will include five additional songs such as “Cardigan” that weren’t part of either theatrical or digital releases of Eras Tour – such as those featuring Swift herself!

Wrench directed the original version of this film, shot over three nights last summer at SoFi Stadium during Lady Gaga’s record-setting tour at LA. It grossed $262 Million worldwide – becoming one of the highest grossing tour films to date.

Director James is well-versed in creating music films, having worked on documentaries for Mary J. Blige and Blur as well as live performance movies with Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Mumford & Sons and BTS – not to mention making content for Coca-Cola and Apple brands.

Disney+ Streaming

Disney+ provides access to an expansive library of movies and shows from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, etc. These titles are accessible on various devices with HDR presentation available for select titles.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film will premiere exclusively on streaming service Hulu in March, according to an announcement Wednesday by Hulu. It will include bonus tracks and four additional acoustic songs that were not part of its theatrical or digital release.

Swift made history at the Grammys by becoming the first artist ever to win Album of the Year four times, revealing her new album The Tortured Poets Department which will be out April 19. She’s expected to attend Super Bowl 51 to support Travis Kelce of Kansas City Chiefs – her current boyfriend – while the televised version of her concert film will also be available to view at this year’s event.

Release Date

Disney+ has secured itself an impressive coup with their acquisition of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie directed by Sam Wrench. Beginning March 15, this extended version will be made available exclusively on their streaming service with additional songs such as “Cardigan” not found in either theatrical or VOD releases.

The extended version will also likely feature some bloopers not seen in the initial release, which has already grossed $262 million worldwide. It will be released just over one month before Taylor Swift releases her next album on April 19th.

Eras Tour stands up as an impressive movie. The PG-13-rated flick plays like a concert, giving fans of Taylor Swift an opportunity to clap and shout along with strangers who share their appreciation of her music. Fans dressed up as Taylor Swift even break theater rules by filming themselves with smartphones on the big screen; turning a cinema into an inclusive Taylor Swift party.

Trailer

Swift’s greatest strength lies in her songwriting talent. Even when her concerts threaten to tire the audience out, Swift reinvents classic hits with new enthusiasm that speaks volumes about her competitive spirit.

Eras Tour stands apart from previous concert films by offering full immersion into an arena performance, rather than using cliches like backstage celebrity banter and voiceover explication. It shows how her fans united over 16 years of pop renaissance through her emotional lyrics about heartbreak and redemption.

As such, this film calls to mind Stop Making Sense (1984), Jonathan Demme’s screen adaptation of Talking Heads’ classic album with the same name by Jonathan Demme – considered an industry classic and considered an early benchmark in concert movies. While playing off fandom slang and featuring an alluring high concept structure, the movie avoids manipulative cliches which have plagued this genre for too long. Instead, audiences will experience something truly fantastic – something regular moviegoers won’t have access to experience themselves.
