DEI

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are both an ethical obligation and strategic business decision. By creating an inclusive workplace culture, attracting top talent, and improving financial results they lead to increased productivity and increased profit.

For DEI initiatives to be a success, companies must understand what factors may derail them – particularly cultural resistance.

John Lennon was shot four times outside the Dakota Building in New York City on December 8, 1980 and left behind his wife Yoko Ono and their two sons Julian and Sean.

Sean Taro Ono Lennon, John and Yoko’s youngest son, is an accomplished singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer, and multi-instrument player. He has released several EPs as well as two rock albums (Into the Sun and Friendly Fire), recorded with Cibo Matto for her album IMA and Primus bassist Les Claypool on their album Monolith of Phobos.

Recently, Sean caused an uproar online when he took issue with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) hiring practices on Twitter. DEI prioritizes minority individuals in hiring practices while often being perceived to have adverse ramifications for free speech and academic freedom. Though no stranger to controversy himself, Sean became targets for his comments regarding DEI practices.

I’m not a racist

John Lennon took an extended respite from Beatle life during 1966’s summer months, spending most of it at home exploring his mind with psychedelic drugs, newspapers, and books such as Timothy Leary’s translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead as well as Hugh Schonfield’s best seller The Passover Plot.

Soon he became the target of some of America?s fiercest religious extremists. Literal-minded Fundamentalist Christians from the South were outraged that he claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ.

The quote caused a nationwide Beatle boycott: radio stations began publicly burning their stocks of their albums while Klansmen held unsettling mass burnings that echoed back to Nazi Germany.

I’m not a bigot

Sean Ono Lennon has become something of an unlikely hero to many this year, criticizing establishment media bias amid the coronavirus pandemic and then attacking Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives on Wednesday in an now deleted X post. Rebranding DEI with an offensive name while suggesting those purporting to fight institutional racism actually create more of it in doing so – “And absolutely no one should be surprised by this”, as Sean wrote on social media.

Responding to hedge fund manager Bill Ackman?s demand that Harvard cease its DEI programs and remove former president Claudine Gay who had to step down following allegations of anti-Semitism and plagiarism against her, Obama offered this remark in response.

I’m not a hater

John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son is rapidly emerging as an outspoken critic. Recently he attacked media for propagandizing Chinese propaganda amid the coronavirus pandemic; and then took aim at Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs via an X post.

Sean Ono Lennon claimed in his post that those claiming to be fighting institutional racism and oppression are actually reinforcing it through their efforts. He pointed to Bill Ackman?s campaign against Harvard DEI initiatives as evidence. Additionally, Ackman called on ex-Harvard President Claudine Gay to step down following antisemitic incidents as well plagiarism scandals affecting her tenure there.

Mark Cuban took to Twitter and wrote in support of Diversity Employment Inclusion (DEI), noting the benefits for businesses in recruiting employees who represent all stakeholder interests and diversity.
