Searches of Taylor Swift on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) resulted in an error message Saturday after sexually explicit deepfakes of her were created with artificial intelligence and quickly spread.

To address the issue, X is actively improving its image moderation tools as well as informing its users of the dangers posed by fake photos and videos.

Deepfake Photos of Taylor Swift Go Viral

After images depicting Taylor Swift in sexually explicit situations went viral, her fan base, known as “Swifties”, quickly responded. They organized online using hashtags such as #ProtectTaylorSwiftAI to spread awareness, encouraging people to report those responsible, as well as sharing images depicting her more positively.

These explicit fakes, which were viewed over 27 million times on X before their account was suspended, likely created with artificial intelligence tools that allow users to alter regular, clothed photos into naked versions – likely as revenge porn. Such imagery has been criminalized in some countries; such tools can be found online by anyone and everyone – meaning anyone could potentially become subjected to deepfake attacks.

As expected, attacks against celebrities such as TikTok creators, journalists, and high school girls are increasing. Deepfakes have become more lifelike over time and more easily go viral, often using face-and-audio-swapping software which mimics facial features or an algorithm creating bodies that look similar. Images may also contain inappropriate or explicit content added via textual overlay.

Deepfakes pose an immense danger to those they depict, potentially having long-term psychological or professional ramifications. Victims can find it difficult to recognize images as fake until it’s too late; the situation is compounded further by legal uncertainty and social media platforms lacking safeguards to protect users effectively.

A New York Times opinion piece this week went beyond the boundaries of acceptable discourse to expose Taylor Swift, suggesting she may be an outcast queer person. Anna Marks used references in Swift’s music and performances as evidence in support of her claim; this infuriated Taylor’s associates; Swift herself has spoken out against this article.

After the Taylor Swift images’ outrage, platform X has temporarily blocked searches for her as a temporary measure to prioritize safety, as they have a zero-tolerance policy toward such material. Unfortunately, however, blocking search results won’t stop this scourge of deepfake porn that harms innocent people both famous and not; technological innovation, legal reform and raising societal awareness will need to happen fast for this to be resolved properly; time is running out!
