Suffolk County DA Andrew Carey announced significant developments today in the case of Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann. The 59-year-old architect stands accused of killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello; in addition to being prime suspect for Maureen Brainard-Barnes’ disappearance and subsequent death.
Investigators were finally able to link Heuermann with the cases when they identified his Chevrolet Avalanche as being similar to trucks described by victims’ accounts and when his physical characteristics fit those described as the suspected perpetrator.
Architect Rex Heuermann Charged with Six Murders
Prosecutors in the Gilgo Beach case charged Manhattan architect Rex Heuermann as a serial killer when they arrested him last July 13 in relation to the cold-case murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello – three sex workers from sex workers Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello who had worked as prostitutes. Heuermann had no prior police involvement prior to being named prime suspect for Maureen Brainard-Barnes 25’s murder which had happened three years earlier in December 2012. Suffolk County commissioner Rodney Harrison initiated a task force specifically dedicated to investigating these killings with only limited success reopening existing investigation of these cold cases of mass slayings.
Rex Heuermann lives with his wife in an exclusive community on Ocean Parkway in Miller Place that has already linked him with three of the victims through cell phone data and DNA from pizza slices found at crime scenes. Additionally, Heuermann’s hair was discovered at several scenes, leading prosecutors to suspect that items used such as tape were taken from their residence.
Heuermann Has 92 Guns
As part of an ongoing investigation, Heuermann has now been charged in three of the 11 sets of remains found along desolate beach highways since 2010. Additionally, he’s considered a prime suspect in Maureen Brainard-Barnes murder case.
Police discovered Heuermann had 200 to 300 guns stashed away in an armored vault at his Massapequa Park home, behind locked doors. He possessed 92 gun permits, according to reports, and attended NRA conventions regularly.
This collection included rifles, pistols, and shotguns manufactured in both the US and England dating from 1860s to present times – many were even used during world wars! Some items were valued up to several hundred dollars each while others had been restored for law enforcement use.
On Friday, Rex Heuermann’s judge ordered that her weapons could be transferred to Nassau County police despite objections by Heuermann’s attorney, though Heuermann plans on challenging this ruling in court.
Heuermann Pleads Not Guilty
After being charged in July with the 2009 and 2010 killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello who worked as Craigslist escorts, Heuermann became the prime suspect for Maureen Brainard-Barnes’ disappearance and death as well. Police discovered her remains on an isolated Long Island beach alongside those belonging to Heuermann and three others involved.
Michael Brown, Heuermann’s attorney, noted on Wednesday that proceedings were “typical”, with negotiations for logistics and discovery taking place throughout the day. Brown stated he received 10 terabytes of information to review, including material related to Heuermann and four victims as well as evidence related to Heuermann himself.
Heuermann appeared before Justice Richard Ambro to officially state his name and plea before him for trial, in which Justice Ambro cited their crimes’ “extreme depravity” when ordering them to be held without bail. Wearing a dark blazer, Heuermann stared straight ahead during the proceedings – without Asa Ellerup being present who has reported being taken unawares by this turn of events.
Heuermann’s Next Court Appearance
Asa Ellerup, Rex Heuermann’s estranged wife, made headlines Wednesday when she showed up at his court appearance to hear evidence against the accused serial killer. Ellerup arrived in Riverhead courthouse driving her Mercedes and with documentary crew Peacock. Asa smiled broadly when Rex left courtroom; according to reports by The New York Post she may even visit him in jail after seeing this court appearance.
Rex Heuermann looked sharper in court wearing a black suit jacket and with his hair more carefully coiffed than normal, as well as sporting an impeccable haircut. Though he did not speak during the 32-minute hearing, he was asked if prison allows them to review case evidence, to which he replied that yes was an option.
Prosecutors provided lab notes and search warrant applications for Rex Heuermann’s Massapequa Park home, storage units and properties both inside and outside New York state as well as 13,000 photos from an extensive house search conducted during which Heuermann is charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello and is suspected in Maureen Brainard-Barnes’ death.
