Bill Belichick has returned to coaching within days of mutually parting ways with the New England Patriots. Now he’s interviewing with Atlanta Falcons about their head-coaching job.
This team is one of seven NFL franchises with head coaching vacancies; however, due to league rules they cannot hold in-person interviews with coaches who are currently employed elsewhere.
The Falcons are in the NFC South
Belichick could provide the Falcons with much-needed advice after firing head coach Arthur Smith after an uneven 7-10 season, which left their young building blocks such as Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts with room to grow – yet lacking an effective quarterback.
Belichick, who recently turned 71 years old, remains one of the premier coaches on the coaching market. During his 24 years with New England he won six Super Bowls – 14 short of Don Shula’s record!
The Falcons have a lot of young talent
The Falcons announced on Monday that six-time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick has been interviewed for their head coaching position, making this interview his first since parting ways with the Patriots last week.
Belichick is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. In 24 years in New England he won six championships under him and currently stands only 14 wins short of Don Shula’s regular season win total record.
The Falcons boast a young quarterback in Desmond Ridder as well as several talented offensive building blocks such as running back Tyler Allgeier and Bijan Robinson as well as wide receivers Drake London and AJ Terrell on offense. Additionally, their defense boasts three first-round picks.
The Falcons have a lot of money
Since rehiring Terry Fontenot and Arthur Smith in 2021, the Falcons have been diligently saving in order to afford top-tier general manager and head coach candidates. Now appears to be the time for action – now is an opportune moment!
The Falcons boast an ample salary cap space, starting with $225 million as a floor and increasing as more teams open vacancies and roll over funds from previous teams.
The Falcons have several pressing free agency needs in free agency, including pass rushers and quarterback upgrades. But with so much money at their disposal, if a candidate can come in who helps this team achieve success it would more than justify its expense.
The Falcons have a lot of talent
The Falcons parted ways with Arthur Smith after three consecutive 7-10 seasons and now possess plenty of young talent on their roster. Draft picks, free agency or trades could all be utilized in finding an appropriate quarterback replacement for Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke who struggled this season.
Belichick boasts extensive NFL coaching experience, winning six Super Bowls and leading New England to 17 division titles during his time. Furthermore, his 333 regular-season and playoff wins rank second all-time behind Don Shula’s 347 wins.
Belichick would provide Atlanta with an instant boost and increase his win total while working toward breaking Don Shula’s record win total of 99 wins. However, it remains uncertain if they’ll grant him complete control over player personnel decisions like Don Shula did, but Blank has stated his desire for patience and thoroughness during their search process for their coach.
The Falcons have a lot of young talent
The Falcons possess a wealth of young talent on defense. Since 2021, three consecutive first-round picks – Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson – have begun paying dividends.
The Falcons would love to give their young talent every advantage possible and one way would be by hiring veteran coaches such as Belichick. There are many factors that must be considered when assessing whether a candidate meets your criteria; Belichick is no different – after 24 years coaching with the Patriots (six of them being Super Bowl title seasons!), including six Super Bowl championship campaigns under his watch he recently parted ways and stands only 14 wins away from passing Don Shula as the winningest coach ever in NFL history.
