Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour Reunite in an Unexpected Broadway Appearance

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and actress Angelina Jolie came back together at Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theater for a performance of Gutenberg!, an original musical featuring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells playing Buddy and Doug, two friends with dreams of performing on Broadway.

Hathaway then took to the stage as a “Broadway producer”, giving the two their contracts. This move has become a hallmark of the show, featuring celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Idina Menzel and Billy Crystal playing this role on other occasions.

Gutenberg! The Musical!

On Wednesday night, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and actress Rachel Weisz made an emotional reunion onstage during a performance of Gutenberg! The Musical! Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells play best friends Bud and Doug who are writing a Broadway musical about Johannes Gutenberg (inventor of printing press). Things quickly get hilarious when they attempt to pitch it as part of a backers audition process.

They’re not the first celebrities to star in this offbeat meta-musical, which made its Broadway premiere Thursday. Hailed for its cleverness since beginning as an extended 45-minute sketch at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and Off-Broadway run in 2006, its latest iteration on Broadway is directed by Alex Timbers who’s best known for staging shows like Here Lies Love, Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Beetlejuice.

This raucous comedy features a surprise celebrity producer to present the main characters with contracts for their musical within a musical. Anne Hathaway who played Miranda Priestly in the 2006 film version was this special guest producer.

The Devil Wears Prada

With its name The Devil Wears Prada and sitcom-bright lighting by Sex and the City cinematographer Florian Ballhaus for Sex and the City cinematographer Florian Ballhaus’s one sheet poster showing an angel pitchfork draped with red lingerie, The Devil Wears Prada was designed to appear like an inexpensive $2 Tuesday matinee romantic comedy; yet beneath its stunning threads and high fashion there lies an important career-based morality tale.

Meryl Streep played Miranda Priestly with such authority that it could have rivaled Michael Douglas’s Gordon Gekko from Oliver Stone’s Wall Street. Unfortunately, Meryl Streep’s performance hasn’t garnered nearly as much recognition.

Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt both excel as newbie assistants to Miranda Priestly; Stanley Tucci gives one of his finest supporting performances ever in recent memory. There are plenty of hilarious lines throughout this movie – worth seeing even for those not interested in fashion!

Anne Hathaway

On Wednesday night, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and actress Anne Hathaway met up again for a small reunion from The Devil Wears Prada (2006) movie based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name; Hathaway played Andy Sachs as Miranda Priestly’s assistant Andy Sachs who Meryl Streep played so perfectly.

Gutenberg!, an award-winning Broadway production starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, left audiences speechless when an unexpected celebrity “Broadway producer” announced they’re funding Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells’ musical within a musical. A number of A-listers, such as Steve Martin, Patti LuPone, Nathan Lane, and Jake Gyllenhaal volunteered their services.

But Wintour herself was taken aback when her daughter, Bee Carrozzini, who serves as producer for the show was revealed as the special guest this time around. Together with Hathaway she donned a hat to make their announcement – which was met with cheers of approval from those seated at the table.

Anna Wintour

Fashion icon Isabella Carrozzini made an unexpected cameo at Wednesday night’s performance of a new Broadway musical helmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Scott Brown, wearing yellow hats that play an integral part of its story.

Hathaway played the title role in Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name, while Meryl Streep played Miranda Priestly – often associated with Wintour based on similar characteristics – the icy editor-in-chief of Vogue that Hathaway often compares herself to.

Hathaway stars as Andy Sachs, an eager young woman who works as Miranda’s assistant. Due to her amazing chemistry with Streep’s character Minnie, Hathaway is often called her real-life counterpart.
