Speed Racer may seem like mindless entertainment at first glance; but its creators strive to go beyond that threshold.

Success lies within its pages: its action and detailed car designs keep audiences enthralled every week, while characters who garner our sympathy despite living unconventional lives make this series truly compelling.

Unfortunately, during its flight it encountered trouble.

From brightly-colored dots depicting Speed’s family to Rex’s darker red blur, this film boasts incredible visual effects that will thrill anime fans and action junkies, but will likely disappoint those seeking more substance than just eye candy.

Robert Sachs

Christian Oliver, 51, his daughters Madita (10), and Annik (12), as well as their pilot Robert Sachs all died Thursday in a Caribbean plane crash near Bequia Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Based on the manga Mach Go-Go-Go, this animated adventure film is an exhilarating ride with flashy visuals and light storytelling, yet an important message about corporate greed.

Film begins in the 1950s when Rex Racer, an eager young boy who loves racing, ventures onto the Grand Prix circuit and crashes and dies during one race. Rex’s family are devastated, yet cannot discuss racing again for some time until an unfamiliar figure named Racer X appears (BIG SPOILER alert!) Turns out it was actually Rex who faked his death to protect his younger brother Speed, thus sparking off another generation of Racer racing.
