Vivek Ramaswamy, 38 years old and biotech entrepreneur from West Des Moines has ended his White House bid and endorsed former President Donald Trump. Modeled his campaign after Trump’s, Ramaswamy ran as an aggressive populist who quickly grabbed headlines by verbally sparring with opponents.
He voiced strong criticism of affirmative action, supported state-level abortion bans and sought to expand presidential powers while dismantling federal governments.
Why I Dropped Out of the Race
Vivek Ramaswamy employed his personal fortune during the campaign to help fund much of his efforts, drawing on millions from it for personal expenditures. Throughout his career – in biotechnology and finance; founding Roivant Sciences and Strive Asset Management respectively; these firms became well known for avoiding “woke” ideology when making investment decisions – something Ramaswamy often touted during campaign trail appearances.
As soon as Vivek Ramaswamy entered the race in February 2023, this 38-year-old wasn’t well known, yet quickly gained support among conservative voters as they saw him as being in line to continue Trump’s MAGA movement.
Policies advocated by Trump included securing America’s southern and northern borders, firing 75% of federal bureaucrats and making election day a national holiday. But his support of conspiracy theories such as an inside job explanation for Jan 6’s Capitol insurrection as well as allegations about an ongoing government scheme to replace white Americans with foreigners made him less popular among some Republicans.
What I Learned
Ramaswamy adopted Trump’s policy vision and identified as part of the “America first” movement during his campaign, criticizing affirmative action, supporting state-level abortion bans and favoring expanding presidential power.
Vivek also responded strongly to critics of his campaign, such as the Republican National Committee chairwoman and co-chair, who claimed her own father was victimized by identity politics. Additionally, he took aim at companies he claimed support social causes or promoted diversity programs that promoted diversity as self-victimization programs.
After failing to gain any traction in his Republican presidential bid, Ramaswamy conceded and supported Donald Trump instead, helping narrow an already narrowed field that saw Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finish second and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley come in third during Iowa caucuses. Regardless of his decision to drop out, his campaign still made an impressionful statement about Iowa; between May 2023 and Monday he held over 300 events across Iowa than both Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis combined!
Why I Supported Trump
Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy made headlines for his longshot White House bid, garnering national attention along the way. Following an unsuccessful presidential run that earned national notice, he dropped out and offered his full endorsement to Donald Trump. Ramaswamy, 38-year-old Roivant Sciences founder made waves prior to Iowa caucuses with his bold comments and conspiracy theories; criticizing companies that supported social justice causes while calling for further review of diversity programs that focus on differences rather than shared values.
Vivek Ramaswamy proposed proposals that some experts warned could test presidential authority, and clashed with his hawkish GOP rivals during debates and speeches. His foreign policy ideas, specifically his call to cut US support for Ukraine and reduce military aid to Israel drew strong condemnation from former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (an Indian American herself).
Although Ramaswamy spent millions on his campaign and held more public events than his rivals combined, he was ultimately unable to gain significant traction against Trump’s support. Still, thanks to his quick wit and deep pockets he managed to establish at least some foothold in Republican politics moving forward.
Why I Won
Vivek Ramaswamy invested millions of his own funds into his campaign and held more public events than any other Republican candidate, as well as developing an innovative social media strategy and visiting all 99 counties of Iowa twice, an effort known as his Double Full Grassley tour. He had high expectations heading into the caucuses.
Roivant Sciences was established as a pharmaceutical company by 37-year-old entrepreneur Eric Roivant in 2014. When entering the race in February 2023, his platform aligned closely with President Donald Trump’s MAGA agenda.
Vivek Ramaswamy was plagued with inexperience and foreign policy views that went beyond party orthodoxy, such as his call for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia as a means to end conflict or his call to reduce US aid to Israel – both were unpopular among GOP voters and led to significant confusion during his campaign. Furthermore, his final stretch campaign also relied heavily on conspiracy theories – all contributing to an inauspicious showing in caucuses.
