At the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, there were many memorable moments; but one which left viewers scratching their heads was when presenters Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos made a comment referencing Ariana DeBose as Oscar winner and Broadway star, Ariana was not pleased by such comments from presenters Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos.
She defended herself via an Instagram post.
Golden Globes
On Sunday night, just days after the Golden Globes, another awards show took place – and quickly earned some criticism due to an insulting joke aimed at one actress in particular. As Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos introduced the Best Song category with Billie Eilish, Lenny Kravitz, Dua Lipa and DeBose being mentioned before cutting to her in the audience who appeared both confused by and not particularly pleased by it all.
Nick Bullen, CEO of Spun Gold – one of the event producers – spoke out in support of DeBose at Variety’s interview, noting he believes any backlash against DeBose is unfair.
I did the thing
DeBose’s inability to pronounce her name correctly (resulting in a mispronounced “anjuhluh bash” sound) as well as her delivery of this line while clapping can all be dissected here; her rap itself also says so much in its unironic yet camp style!
DeBose’s tweet quickly went viral, prompting remixes and memes as well as remarks from Adele, Lizzo and even Angela Bassett herself. Though she later deactivated her account on Twitter, DeBose is back into the fray on Instagram with some humorous trolling – it’s worth checking out.
Angela Bassett did the thing
At 69-years old, she arrived on the red carpet wearing an elegant purple gown that showed off her slimmed down frame as she made her way down the runway. When accepting her award she said that acting is more than simply performing; good actors’step into a character’s shoes to understand their emotions and channel experiences that transcend screen’
She continued: ‘This is an enormous responsibility and I would like to extend my gratitude to my family, friends and colleagues for making this possible. To my amazing fans – thank you sincerely, you truly make my world go round!’
After drawing criticism for her remarks during last week’s Golden Globes hostage of Jo Koy (aka actor Kevin Spacey), which included some jokes that failed to land, DeBose made headlines again at Critics Choice awards ceremony, during the presentation for Best Song category presentation where presenters Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos made fun of DeBose by name-dropping actors who consider themselves singers such as Jack Black and Ryan Gosling; cameras panned around to reveal DeBose was clearly unhappy about their comment – cameras even pan down on her face so we saw that comment; cameras pan around to reveal DeBose was visibly upset about the comment made towards her ex-partner – nor was she happy about being mentioned alongside them both present!
You have the audacity to say she’s an actress “who thinks they can sing”
Ariana DeBose has taken no guff from jokesters at Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards, when presenters Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos omitted her name when listing nominees like Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, etc. However, Ramsey and Ramos took pleasure in making fun of some actors nominated for singing abilities including Jack Black, Ryan Gosling -and Ariana DeBose (from Hamilton on Broadway) who have nominated for that category – including DeBose who has nominated for that category in previous years.
Cameras then turned back towards DeBose, who appeared taken aback but eventually laughed along with everyone onstage. Her reaction attracted much commentary online with many criticizing award show writers for making such jokes at her expense while others want to know who approved such material in the first place.
