Spencer Carbery tinkered with his lineup, and it paid off. Nic Dowd opened scoring at 4:22 of the second period with a backhand shot during a two-on-one rush; Nicolas Aube-Kubel assisted on it as well.
John Carlson tied the game with an incredible long slapshot that beat Cam Talbot top shelf while Beck Malenstyn provided secondary assistance – his 28th career goal!
John Carlson Scores With Under a Minute Left
John Carlson scored the game-winning goal with 53 seconds remaining in regulation and Washington held off Los Angeles Kings’ comeback attempt to beat them 4-3 at Capital One Arena on Sunday. No one scored in the first period as both teams tried to establish an offensive presence. John Carlson opened up Washington’s scoring with an individual rush with Nic Dowd and Beck Malenstyn at 4:22 of the second. Just over 60 seconds later Kevin Fiala tied it on Los Angeles’ power play after Connor McMichael took an early high-sticking penalty.
Washington Ends a Two-Game Slump
The Capitals entered this match having lost two straight and following an inept performance against the Sharks, yet their statistics at five-on-five suggest their funk may not be as severe.
The team remains one of the NHL’s premier teams when it comes to shooting percentage, scoring chances for, offensive rebounding and goal-scoring efficiency, ranking fifth overall and being one of only two clubs who have permitted less than 30 goals this season.
Washington rallied from their poor start in the second period as Orlov set up Dmitry Kovalchuk for an easy one-timer from Orlov, then Nic Aube-Kubel gave them the lead with a pass from John Carlson that found its way between Lyon’s pads for another goal that made it 3-1 with about one minute left and Sheary scoring an empty-net goal to extend their winning streak to four games and bring Alex Ovechkin within one goal of Marcel Dionne for fifth place on NHL goals list with 730! With two goals against Philadelphia Ovechkin moved closer towards fifth place overall, passing him by one goal behind Marcel Dionne for fifth place on all-time NHL goals list with 730 while two goals scored against Marcel Dionne for fifth place all-time NHL goals list of 731 with two goals against flyers putting Alex Ovechkin moving him closer towards surpassing Marcel Dionne by one goal for fifth place on all-time NHL goals list with 731!
Washington’s Fourth Line Makes All the Difference
After an uneven first period, Washington’s fourth line came alive in this game. Nic Dowd opened up scoring at 4:22 of the second with a backhander on a two-on-one rush with Nicolas Aube-Kubel; Adrian Kempe tied things at 7:12 before Kevin Fiala put Los Angeles ahead 2-1 at 13:02 with an assisted goal off Phillip Danault’s stick.
Spencer Carbery made a line change midway through the third period in response to what he considered an unpleasant sequence and put Alex Ovechkin with Dylan Strome and Max Pacioretty together, ultimately helping extend Ovechkin’s point streak by five games. It proved successful as Ovechkin extended it even further!
This season marks an all-new top power-play unit for the Capitals. Center Nic Dowd and center/right wing Travis Boyd return, while right wing Garnet Hathaway and left wing Brendan Leipsic were acquired via free agency. Forward Chandler Stephenson may return depending on how his arbitration proceedings progress with his agent.
Los Angeles Tilts in the Second Period
After the first period, the Kings established themselves as the dominant team. Gabriel Vilardi quickly made an impactful statement as he scored on shorthanded in just 1:15 after Viktor Arvidsson’s slap shot was deflected off Ilya Sorokin and into the back of the net by Ilya Sorokin and had hit Gabriel Vilardi on its path.
Within one minute, Rasmus Kupari took advantage of Sebastian Aho’s miscue in the neutral zone to feed Arthur Kaliyev an easy one-timer for another goal for Los Angeles.
Washington coach Spencer Carbery responded by switching up their lines, pairing Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Max Pacioretty together for one period. That combination immediately tied the game at 1:01 of the third period before John Carlson scored his third goal of the year with an amazing long shot from right point that beat Cam Talbot on an long shot through traffic from Cam Talbot on Cam Talbot’s short side – it then improved Washington’s record to 15-10-5 while Kevin Fiala and Adrian Kempe netted goals for Los Angeles who lost five consecutive contests during that stretch!
