2023 Emmys – Breaking Record For Most Wins by Actors of Color

On Monday night, the strike-delayed Emmy Awards finally made their long-awaited debut and were full of historic moments and pleasant surprises.

Succession, The Bear and Beef led with multiple wins at this year’s awards show; but what made this year particularly striking was how many actors of color won awards – here is a snapshot of some of them:.

Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri

Quinta Brunson made history when she became the first Black woman in more than four decades to win top comedy series actress for Abbott Elementary, along with Ayo Edebiri of The Bear who took home supporting comedy actress.

Edebiri stars as Chef Sydney Adamu on FX’s breakout dramedy The Bear and earned her both SAG and Gotham nominations for her performance. Additionally, she started out her career working on Broad City before going on to appear and write for shows such as Big Mouth and Dickinson.

At this year’s awards show, fans saw many memorable reunions – Sheryl Lee Ralph from General Hospital’s veteran teacher Barbara Howard was honored as best supporting actress in a drama series.

RuPaul Charles

RuPaul Andre Charles is America’s most commercially successful drag queen, an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ issues and author of three books with 11 Emmy awards to his credit.

Charles was born in San Diego and moved with his family to Atlanta when he was in his teens. While studying at Northside School of Performing Arts he decided to leave to pursue his goal of becoming an entertainer celebrity.

RuPaul first made headlines for hosting The RuPaul Show on VH1, one of the first openly gay shows hosted by a major network. Since then, he has appeared in various films and earned multiple Grammy nominations for his music. Furthermore, as host and executive producer of RuPaul’s Drag Race he has become internationally acclaimed.

Niecy Nash-Betts

Niecy Nash-Betts made history at the 2023 Emmy awards by becoming the first Black woman ever to win an Emmy lead acting award in a limited series for her performance as Glenda Cleveland on Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix. She dedicated her victory to all Black and brown women who remain unseen yet overpoliced, such as Glenda Cleveland, Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor whose voices go unheard while their rights go unrecoil.

Nash began her television career with roles on daytime dramas such as NYPD Blue, Girlfriends, ER and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Additionally she made appearances in Cookie’s Fortune and Almost Famous movies.

She previously hosted Style Network reality show Clean House, earning two Daytime Emmy nominations and one Gracie Allen Award nominations in its four years of production. Since 2019, she has appeared as Delores Wise in Ava DuVernay’s miniseries When They See Us as well as playing feminist leader Florynce Kennedy on FX’s Mrs. America series.

Steven Yeun

Steven Yeun first made waves as Glenn Rhee on The Walking Dead and has since amassed credits in short films and feature projects alike. He lent his voice talents for Okja, Minari, Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia as well as appearing in daytime drama Humans and horror film Burning – nominated for a Daytime EMMY Award nomination due to General Hospital work.

At this year’s ceremony, history was made in the acting categories. Niecy Nash-Betts made history by becoming the first black actress ever to win best supporting actress in a limited series for Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Additionally, Niecy made an emotional speech for Tracy Morgan after his serious accident over a year ago.

Ali Wong

Ali Wong is a critically-acclaimed comedian, actress, producer, and writer who is best known for her clever wit and observational humor that addresses issues like relationships, parenthood, and social taboos. She has appeared in various TV shows and movies such as Netflix comedy Beef.

As well as her producing duties on Savages, she earned one of its two Emmy wins for producing it. Additionally, she received an Emmy nomination and won one herself for Breaking In (Netflix series) as an actor, and nominated again for Savages (TV show).

She is known as an entertainer who is open about her sexuality and vocal about promoting inclusion on screen, most notably at the 2023 Emmys, as her presence was an encouraging sign for diversity representation on TV. In addition, she is also an award-winning author.
